CAMP BOO
A ghastly regional burn theme camp making yearly hauntings at SideBurn and ArtFarm
NOTE: This is a new project launched in November of 2024 in preparation for Camp Boo's debut at SideBurn 2025. (fingers crossed for placement) This camp is made up from people living in our growing North East Ontario community. (Not the north you may be thinking about southern people. Like actually 6 hours north of Toronto in the Boreal Forest north haha, we are up here)
Below we will share photos, video and stories from Camp Boo's adventures as it becomes a scary reality filling your souls with dread (or maybe just warm tea) bwahahaha.
What is Camp Boo all about anyways?
Camp Boo is a celebration of life and of death and of how when someone you love passes, they kind of live on through you, they are in some way still there, with you. Maybe not haunting you but still they linger on somehow. We want to acknowledge and celebrate that.
We also want to point to the phenomena of silly, cheesy, or "bad" jokes and their role in burner culture. Was this a reaction to the principle of decommodification? Are bad jokes an alternative currency? Should we fake laugh or just boo in the face of the joke teller? Lets discuss over some tea!
We as a camp offer to the community an attractive home-made 20'x40' temporary rain/shade structure that serves as a gathering place complete with a graveyard streetside, fun lighting, and spooky sounds all powered by a mobile solar system. We will host daily hauntings where anyone can join in, enjoy some hot tea we offer, and grab a ghost costume as we head out to haunt the community. Whether you show up to do the haunting as a ghost or find yourself being haunted as a non-ghost this offers participation from all. Ghostly demands of bad jokes will be made and if you want to exorcise these ghastly intruders you must satisfy them with bad jokes. You will be booed. Don't take it personally, these are ghosts we are dealing with here after all.
Other possible offerings we may provide if not this year, then in following years are:
Ghost themed art installations that focus on the 10 principles.
A pac-man and ms. pac-man costume for silly ghost chasing shenanigans.
Ghost story time around an open fire.
Growing and wild harvesting all the herbs needed for the next years tea in our new garden spaces and from the Boreal forest we live in.
Expansion of our covered area, camp membership, and the addition of even more spooky decorative and lighting creativity.
A bigger graveyard to meander through and discover interactive aspects if you dare? sounds good, lets do it.
Will we build a haunted house facade someday? We cant say we wont for sure.
Big cauldron that the tea is served from? Maybe.
Ghost shaped pancake breakfast? Its very possible.
Ghost umbrellas for rainy time hauntings.
Fire art. (high above where ghost costumes flap in the wind)
